Three generations of Valettes have made wine on their 8.5 hectare estate in Chaintré, located between the Mâcon and Beaujolais. Philippe Valette’s father was the first person in the region to use his estate’s grapes to make their own cuvées, rather than selling them off to other winemakers. Philippe converted the vineyard to organic in 1990, despite the fact that his degree in oenology taught him absolutely zero about organic practices – which led to a lot of trial and error. He’s now considered one of the godfathers of natural winemaking in the region, and though his minimal intervention wines may not be what you’d expect from Burgundy, that’s all the more reason to give his elegant Chardys a look.
