Pierre Jancou, Schlückli 2025
Place: Padern, France
Grape: 40% Carignan, 40% Syrah, and 20% Grenache Noir
Vibe: Juicy
If you’re into natural wine, it’s pretty likely Jancou’s name might ring a few bells. Former cook and restaurateur, the ex-proprietor of the iconic Café des Sports in Padern, importer. You name it, he’s done it. Now, though, he’s solely focused on his full-time vigneron duties. I’m so, so pleased to finally see these in the UK for the first time. Everything is vinified separately, always in whole clusters, and here we see only free-run juice. Things are then all blended before going off to age in 54-litre demijohns. This looks inky and dark, but it’s so fresh and easy. Bright but brambly fruit, soft tannins, and depth without heaviness. It’s really soulful, and a wine that instantly brings out a smile. Just grapes!
