JURA FEVER

by Megan Jones

Hey,

Fionn is going B2B this week! Yesterday a lovely Jura allocation flew off the shelves in record time, but don’t worry, the fun doesn’t stop there. We've got some fresh stock, old faves, and a couple of newcomers from our favourite region to keep you entertained.

First up, we’ve topped up on some more Gahier, which is far too underrated here in the UK. Over in Jura, it’s very much the label of choice on the winemakers’ tables at lunch. The house style, even in the ‘ouillé’ bottles, flirts with a touch of oxidative character from long barrel aging while retaining the regions’ associated cut and thrust. Les Follasses is all citrus and salt while Les Crets is a cerebral beast. Ginger apple and spice. These are buy-on-sight bottles for me. Vin Jaune ain’t half bad either…

Then we’ve got La Grappa’A. They’re fresh to the scene but already pushing out mighty accomplished bottles. The Chardonnay is smooth, sesame-scented, and silky, while the Savagnin shows off yellow fruit and stones. There are few producers in the region where I prefer their reds, but these guys do them so delicately, I’m not sure they’d even register as red if drunk blind. The Ploussard is like blood orange in both taste and color, and the Trousseau follows suit with a little more of a white pepper kick.

We’ve also received some odds and ends from Tissot while we wait for their big yearly release. The Ouille is a blend from a mix of sites and is a top-tier bottle that is never around for long. The Sous Voile is very much a benchmark in the reigon. Sursis is a long-term keeper if you can resist opening it for a few years. Harder said than done. Rose Massale is rare as hens teeth too.

And last but not least, another top-up from Maison des Saules. This team, fresh off their second vintage, is channeling the finesse of their former boss, François Rouset-Martin. The Chardonnay is lighter, fresher, and softer. It’s in a nice spot already. The Savagnin, on the other hand, packs a linear, lean energy again makes it uplifting now whilst hinting that this is ready to go the distance.

LONG LIVE THE JURA!

Fionn
